pygmalion

In the story of Ovid, Pygmalion, is a sculptor who creates with ivory a female nude for which he falls in love. Wishing and hoping endlessly that his statue might come alive, he decides to sleep next to her. On the occasion of the ritual feasts in honor of Aphrodite, Pygmalion goes to the temple of the goddess and asks her to give him in marriage the sculpture created with his hands, making it a human creature.
Aphrodite then fulfills the desire of Pygmalion who thus witnesses the slow animation of his statue which he sees open his eyes and feels the first breath.
The union of Pygmalion with his beloved statue is sealed by a marriage, following which they will have a daughter, named Paphos, who will give her name to the homonymous city of Cyprus.
