Chiron is a character of the Greek mythology.
He is a centaur, son of Cronus and the oceanine Filira.
Because of the magic practiced by his mother Teti, he was called to cure Achille when the latter burned his ankle. Chiron replaced the ankle of Achilles with that of a dead giant, Damiso, particularly gifted in running.
Thanks to this substitution, Achille became famous with the nickname "pie' veloce".
Chiron was a great friend of Heracles.
The latter, coming to conflict with the Centaurs, killed some of them and the survivors took refuge in the cave where Chiron lived.
In the course of battle an arrow, shot by Heracles, struck at the knee of Chiron himself.
Such a wound, caused by a poisoned arrow, could not heal but it could not even bring to death Chiron, born immortal, so that he caused unspeakable suffering that led him to the most dark despair.
After having longed for death, Chiron succeeded in fulfilling this desire by exchanging his immortality with the titan Prometheus, who had become mortal through his clashes with Zeus. The father of the gods, to whom the centaur was particularly dear, wanted him close to him in the sky, giving rise to the constellation of the Centaur.
